I was replacing this Sony DVD player for my old basic Toshiba. This Sony costs almost twice as much because it is supposed to have near HD resolution.

This DVD player does an excellent job of upconverting in my opinion. I also have a far more expensive Oppo DVD player and I would say they are on par.

Sony's specifications note that this unit has an S-Video output, along with the composite, component video, and the HDMI outputs.
